The Timeless Allure of “Five Oxen Picture”
“Five Oxen Picture” has long been lauded as “a remarkable piece of art, with the five oxen exuding an air of grandeur.” Created by Han Huang (韩滉)(723 – 787 AD), a native of Chang’an (present – day Xi’an, Shaanxi Province) during the Tang Dynasty, Han was a master at portraying both humans and animals. His paintings of oxen, sheep, and donkeys were vividly lifelike. Among his works, those featuring oxen were especially outstanding, demonstrating a robust and unadorned style.
Over the centuries, this masterpiece has passed through many hands. In the Song Dynasty, it was part of the imperial collection, and the poet Lu You saw it in the royal repository. During the Yuan Dynasty, it circulated among collectors like Zhao Bo’ang, Zhao Mengfu. Later, it came into the possession of Xiang Yuanbian in the Ming Dynasty and the Wang family in Jiangnan during the Qing Dynasty before entering the imperial court. After going missing during the invasion of Beijing by the Eight – Power Allied Forces in 1900, it resurfaced in Hong Kong in the 1950s. Thanks to Premier Zhou Enlai, it was purchased and is now housed in the Palace Museum.
