The “Hundred Deer Picture” was painted during the Qing Dynasty by Ignatius Sickeltart (1708 – 1780). He was from Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) and a Jesuit missionary of the Catholic Church. In the 10th year of Qianlong’s reign, he was summoned to Beijing by imperial decree. At first, he worked in the Imperial Workshop for painting, and later he entered the Ruyi Hall. He was good at portraiture, birds, and beasts. He was a disciple of Giuseppe Castiglione, and his painting style was similar to that of his master.
1. Scenic Depiction in the Picture
In this scroll, the grassland scenery outside the Great Wall is depicted. The mountains are filled with red maple and yellow leaves, and groups of deer roam among them. Some are walking or swimming, some are lying down to rest on their knees, and some are fighting with their antlers locked. Ignatius Sickeltart used Western techniques to present the texture of the deer’s fur. However, the outlines of the deer’s feet are relatively weak in brushwork.
2. Collaboration of Different Artistic Styles
The landscape, trees, and rocks in the picture were painted by Chinese painters. So, this is a collaborative work. In the cross – stitch version of the “Hundred Deer Picture”, this unique combination of Western and Chinese artistic elements is vividly presented.
